📸 After making their first combat jump on D-Day, paratroopers Forrest Guth and Floyd Talbert of Easy Company/506th PIR/101st Airborne pose for a photo with some locals in Normandy, France.
Their story was made famous in the HBO mini-series “Band of Brothers.
Forest Guth and Floyd Talbert made their first combat jump together, with the rest of Easy Company, into Normandy on June 6, 1944.
After landing in a meadow, the pair met up with Walter Gordon and John Eubanks.
As they moved through the night trying to locate members of their unit, the group came across the remains of a crashed C-47.
The downed plane was Stick #66 which contained the Company’s Headquarters section including their new commmading officer, Lieutenant Thomas Meehan, and three of its most senior non-commissioned officers:
First Sergeant Bill Evans, Staff Sergeant Murray Roberts, and Sergeant Elmer Murray. In total, 17 men of Easy Company would be lost in the crash.
As the sun came up, the small group fought alongside paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne division before joining their own unit in time to capture the French town of Carentan.
By the time the company was pulled off the line, 22 of its men had been killed in action and another 43 had been wounded. This would leave just 69 enlisted men and five officers left of the original Toccoa men.
The 746th FEAF Band recorded the only known album by a frontline band unit in the jungles of the Pacific.
