What are the pros and cons of being a military sniper?
Pros - You get more autonomy than in the rifle platoons. Top corridor tend to leave you alone as you are such a small platoon (Typically no more than 16 guys) and you're off doing site-specific training.
It's a bit more grown up as you are expected to have the ability to work in pairs if needed, and so need to have the maturity to work alone.
You also get more say in kit etc. The job itself is pretty cool. It's top level soldiering. It takes infantry soldiering to the ultimate level. You are THE unit experts in shooting, fieldcraft, small unit tactics, recce etc.
You also get civvies who know exactly fuck all about the role thinking you're some sort of super soldier (you're not), and drooling over your job on the internet.
You get lots of free range time and the Army pays for your ammo. You get to wear a pretty badge on your 2 dress.
Cons - You're too cold, too hot, too wet or too minging all the time. You have to carry shit loads of ISTAR stuff everywhere on ops.
You are constantly sleep deprived on ops and exercise. You keep getting told off for having cam cream behind your ears on parade.
You get officers who don't know what your job entails tasking you inappropriately. You can get overstretched as you are in big demand, so tours are exhausting.
Promotion is a pain if you want to stay in role as there are limited jobs. You have to shit in a bag in front of your mates and help them do the same.
